My first forays into a Lilou Dress

I am awful at blogging, so I have decided to write this post straight after the last one, and then schedule it to be posted another day. I love being able to do that! I feel very organised! I may even do another one! (or not. but you will have to wait a couple of days to see if I have or if I have not…)

I have been busy though; I travelled back home for the Easter holidays, did some teaching, met up with some friends, reapplied for student finance, did a lot of shopping… so I have not been idle!

I have also painstakingly traced round the Lilou dress pattern from Tilly Walnes’ ‘Love at First Stitch’, which I got at Christmas. It took me forever, and I had monopoly over the dining room table for the best part of a morning, but I did get it done! (I thought I had photos of this, but apparently not. Not that they would have been particularly exciting photos mind you.. just image a lot of paper on a table)

This holiday I was supposed to be making a Ruby dress for my sister, however at the last minute she decided to watch the rugby instead of going fabric shopping, so I don’t think it will be done this time round. I did go shopping and pick up a lot of bedding (prettily patterned ones from charity shops) so that she wouldn’t have to leave the house to pick the fabric, but alas, none of them she liked. Her loss really! I found the nicest patterned one; white with pink and yellow and blue flowers; it is very summery!

I was planning on making my first Lilou dress with a yellow and white table cloth that my Nana bought me at the same time as she bought my cat lady material, but I have left it in Plymouth. I was a bit at a loss because I don’t have much fabric here (hence why my sorbetto is made out of very stiff cushion covering, and looks like something out of a children’s book), and I had really wanted to do some sewing.

That is when I put two and two together, and used some pretty bedding fabric to make my Lilou!

2015-03-27 15.53.30This is the fabric folded in two. It was a double duvet cover (thank goodness) and the underside was plain white. So I decided to do something different. I cut through both layers at the same time, cutting out a lining at the same time! I have never sewn with lining before, and it is a bit tougher on the old sewing machine so I am doing most by hand.

Here is my attempt at doing a scalloped neckline… I don’t think it has quite worked, but I will see when I try it on! If not, I will just shear it off and no one will be any the wiser! (unless they have read this blog post which I doubt)

I know I know, the photos are upside down etc etc but hey, I can live with that! Just look at the pretty fabric!

I machined-sewed the darts in the bodice, and the tops of the arms together, and the rest I am hand-sewing because I don’t think the machine can handle four layers of fabric, and I feel more in control this way anyway. The pleats have gone in, and everything is pinned into place so the next time I have five minutes, I can get straight to it! I have just ordered a zip from eBay, which will arrive when I am on holiday, so that is perfect. The pattern/Tilly calls for an invisible zip but hey. Why stress myself? I don’t want that extra hassle, and I’m sure an exposed zip will be fine….

That is it for now, after Easter weekend I will get back to it, and sew with renewed vigour, but for now, have a lovely break!

Knitting Square Ted

As you have probably realised, I have recently learnt to knit. I am very proud of myself, as it was a craft that I didn’t think I would ever get in to, as it looked too fiddly. But. Here I am! And I can officially call myself a knitter!

You may remember the bunny rabbit I knitted last month. Well, I set myself a challenge to make a bigger cuddly toy, and here it is!

The pattern is from the same book as the bunny, and has a mini ted and a maxi ted, and I challenged myself to the maxi, which involved knitting over 100 rows. Which was hard!

But I did it! you have to knit each section separately, so the body/head, both arms and both legs are stitched on after they have been sewn into tubes and stuffed.

Unfortunately, I sewed one of his legs the wrong way, so the knitting is sitting the wrong way, and one leg is slightly shorter than the other one. Other than that, I am super proud!

2015 Sewing Goals

I know, I know, Christmas hasn’t even been yet, but I thought I would outline my sewing goals for next year. I was inspired by Kerry over at PennyDog Patchwork, who wrote this post. She has made five sewing resolutions, but I think I will make as many as I can think of.

1) My first sewing goal will be to keep sewing. I started sewing again in the summer, which is when I also started blogging my makes. I have found that I enjoy sewing more when I know that I am going to share it with you guys. So in 2015, I want to keep sewing

2) My second sewing goal is to sew more tops. I have only tried sewing one top and it did not end very well. I am, however, more likely to be able to wear them than I am skirts and dresses. I have already printed out several PDF top patterns, so I am ready to go!

3) My third sewing goal is to conquer Colette patterns. Any reader of my blog will know that I do not see eye to eye with these patterns, however I hear so many good things about them, I would rather get on with them. I have printed out the Sorbetto, and I have the Colette pattern book, so I have everything I need.

4) My fourth sewing goal is to use my sewing patterns. I have a huge pattern stash. I am probably not the only one, so I would be happy if anyone could give me some advice!

5) My fifth sewing goal is to enter more sewing competitions. I really enjoyed entering the Cat Lady Sewing Competition and the Grease inspired one, and so I want to do more of them.

6) My sixth sewing goal is to work on my sewing techniques. I am not the most experienced sewist, and I want to sew better. I am armed with the internet and my sewing books, watch out!

So these are my six goals, and I will hopefully be able to accomplish them all… We will see!

PDF Pattern Chaos – and Christmas Presents!

Christmas songs are booming through the house, and I am finally home! (Well, I got back on Thursday but shhh). We are having an early Christmas today, before we go off and visit family on the big day. This morning we opened a couple of presents each, and mine were sewing related, yay!

I got a teeny weeny travel sewing set;

(So cute!)

And, – I am so so so happy Yay!- I also got ‘Love at first stitch’ by Tilly Walnes. I have heard  so many good things about this book, and I am so so excited to start sewing her creations! The Francoise dress looks beautiful and I think I have the perfect material to make it in, but I am just waiting on finding it cheaper – whether it be on eBay or in a sale-. Anyway, very exciting stuff!

As you can see from the title, and also if you follow me on instagram, I spent last night painstakingly piecing together PDF patterns. They will be the death of me, they take so long!

I put together the free Colette Sorbetto top; yes I am willing to give them another go, even after my disastrous run-in with the Violet blouse.

I also printed cut and stuck the leggings pattern I bought while on discount, and now just need to find/order some appropriate material and I will have a go in the new year. (All very exciting as I bought myself a gym class membership, which starts in January…)

The last pattern I put together was the Fancy Tiger Crafts Sailor Top I won, which I am also excited about finding fabric to use. I may even stash bust (ha ha ha) when I get back to uni; one of my wardrobes is getting very hard to close with the piles of material in there!

If you are interested in seeing all the things I have won so far, have a look at my winnings page.

Here are some photos of the chaos from last night;
